SCOPE: Reports to the Production Engineering Manager. Scope and quantity of projects reflects low to moderate levels of ability and experience related to Wilwood product manufacturing development.

SUMMARY: Wilwood Engineering is a global developer of high-performance braking solutions and technologies. We utilize innovative design systems to streamline operations and deliver products and services to the automotive industry. We are looking for an experienced manufacturing engineer to identify opportunities for improvement and increase productivity while maintaining product quality. The ideal candidate will have a natural drive to improve processes and lead dynamic projects that improve the way brake parts are delivered to customers worldwide.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and design tooling in 2D/3D SolidWorks CAD system.
  • Responsible for initial concept designs, and if required, control logic outlines.
  • Coordinate prototype tooling development and process validation.
  • Support tooling design for CNC machining such as Horizontal & Vertical Milling, and Multi-Axis Turning Centers.
  • Support Finishing Department processes that include anodizing, e-coating, powder coating, laser engraving and screen printing.
  • Support Assembly Department tooling and testing requirements and process improvements.
  • Create improved production tooling designs and manufacturing processes for high usage, and high-value products.
  • Leverage new manufacturing tools like additive manufacturing, 3D scanning and automation.
  • Communicate technical information as required by customers or vendors within the scope of assigned projects.
  • Periodic travel to customer, vendor, and/or test locations as required within the scope of assigned projects.
  • Communicate technical information to required departments to push project timelines forward.
  • Alert management to potential design risks.
  • Proactively bring updates to related project meetings.
  • Provide technical assistance to designated R&D/Eng personnel.
  • Maintain effective operational procedures to assure process control and accuracy.
  • Ensure that projects are cost-effective, price-competitive and maintain a high standard of quality and integrity.
  • Monitor and report, when necessary, on critical producibility or high variability points within the developmental process flow.
  • Participate in the “Research and Development to Production Transition” process to assure good configuration control and low design and inventory risk.
  • Maintain currency in the latest relevant manufacturing technologies.
  • Seek professional growth and advancement through continued education.

Education and/or Experience

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering – Manufacturing, Mechanical or Automotive Engineering
  • Automotive-related experience
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills
  • Hands-on 3D modeling proficiency (SolidWorks preferred)
  • In-depth understanding of lean manufacturing principles
  • Hands-on experience building small prototypes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years’ experience in engineering
  • Working knowledge of FEA simulation software
  • Experience with hydraulics, braking systems, and vehicle dynamics
  • Lean Six Sigma certification
  • Proficiency with analytical tools, workflow time studies, and process balancing

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to read ANSI Y14.5 drawings with an understanding of true positioning and geometric tolerancing, and a working knowledge of descriptive geometry.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Knowledgeable of materials and processes in a manufacturing environment in order to determine good manufacturing practices. Ability to translate these concepts into tangible benefits.

Work Location: In person

Salary: $75,000 - $110,000 annual
